PPI was engaged by Bravus Mining & Resources to deliver the design, supply and installation of lightning protection systems across critical infrastructure at the Carmichael Coal Mine, including the ROM, stockpile, TLO and reject bins.
PPI commenced the project with a detailed site assessment to identify existing structures suitable for integration into the lightning protection system. This included light poles across the ROM and stockpile areas, which were assessed for their ability to support elevated Dynasphere air terminals.
The system was developed using a risk-based design approach aligned with the nominated Lightning Protection Level (LPL). For open-area protection, the Collection Volume Method (CVM) was applied to model the interception zones of each air terminal, providing effective coverage across large, exposed operational areas.
Using this approach, PPI optimised the placement of each system to achieve continuous protection across the ROM and stockpile. Where additional coverage or elevation was required, 30 m freestanding poles were installed to support the Dynasphere systems.
At the reject bins and Train Load Out (TLO) facility, existing structures were utilised to support the lightning protection system, extending the protection radius while allowing the mine to continue loading coal during lightning events.
In collaboration with Bravus Mining & Resources, PPI delivered an engineered solution providing reliable protection for both personnel and critical infrastructure across the site.
